[ cheers and applause ] >> cenk: there you have it the first presidential debate of 2012. i have a feeling we have mixed feelings about how that debate went. of course you have to keep in mind we'll be discussing tactics here. we know all of the policies and facts that go behind us. some of the viewers might be experiencing those policies in substance for the first time and they might have a different take. now on to the tactics and how it appears, vice president gore? >> al gore: i said before the debate that i thought that romney was going to be a better performer tonight, because he knows how far behind he is and he had to bring his a game, and i think he did. i don't think it was the best debate performance for president obama. i agree with you we'll have to see how the specifics on the substantive issues settle in as people reflect on them. but the first visceral reaction i had was that romney did himself some good in this debate. i'm strongly supporting

i'm jim lehrer of the pbs news hour. i welcome you to the first of the 2012 presidential debates between president barack obama the democratic nominee and former massachusetts governor mitt romney the republican nominee. this debate and the next three, two presidential, one vice presidential, are sponsored by the commission on presidential debates. tonight's 90 minutes will be about domestic issues. and will follow a format designed by the commission. there will be six, roughly 15-minute segments with two-minute answers for the first question. then open discussion for the remainder of each segment. thousands of people offered suggestions on segment subjects or questions via the internet and other means but i made the final selections. and for the record, they were not submitted for approval to the commission or the candidates. the segments as i announced in advance will be three on the economy and one each on health care, the role of government, and governing. with an emphasis throughout on differences, specifics, and ch

when it got to the role of golf, jim lehrer asked that and i thought they stated their case and mitt romney stated it well where he said he doesn't believe the federal government can do much that is better than the private sector can be left to do or individuals can do and barack obama, you know, he started by saying the major role of government is keeping its people safe. but that is a fundamental disagreement between conservatives and liberals. i think -- i don't know that too many people would have been confused about their answers or would have expected them to say something else but i think it's important that your vote this time around is determined by what role you think government should have. the key difference to remeer is in the last four years with the economic collapse, we live in a world, in a country where 71% of economic decisions are directed by the american, by the voter, by the consumer. when that drops, because of the fact that people don't have money and they don't have jobs, who fills in for it? >> the fed. >> that is what some of the thinking is. the government
